Elderly Care in Portsmouth NH: Music Can Be a Great Tool for Inspiring Seniors to Walk down Memory Lane

Music means so many things to so many people. Thinking back to a time when you heard your favorite song on the radio and how it made you feel, the trek had been inspired by a song.  Now, imagine that for seniors; how that boost from music could bring so many benefits and positively affect moods.

For instance, after a stressful day, listening to music can help calm the emotions.  Need some motivation or energy, such as to workout? Turning to music can give endurance, endorphin release, and an overall sense of feeling good.

Music has the ability to get you off the couch and onto the dance floor – even if it’s just your living room or kitchen floor! It can get you in the holiday spirit. Or it could move you to tears.

What music can do for people … includes seniors.  Unlike most anything else, music can lift an emotion.  Having music on for a senior who is say, having a down day, could turn their day around!

Music comes in many forms. There is of course, the songs of old. And while today’s radio stations may not play all the old favorites, there could be CDs, revivals, maybe even old albums found in thrift stores.  Sometimes, seniors have some of the old music packed away amongst their things.  When dug out, brought to the elderly care facility, and played, memories can rise to the surface.

Another thing music can do is inspire someone to move, groove, and dance away the blues! Not only does dancing make you feel better, it’s also great exercise.  And music accompanying exercise brings more inspiration to the task.

A great jazzy beat can help you to move a bit longer and enjoy it! And releasing those endorphins helps you feel even better! Too, listening to soft music before going to bed may help a senior sleep better.

Then, there’s playing music.  So many people have a wonderful gift to be able to play an instrument and/or sing.  And sharing that gift with others at the elderly care facility can help uplift and inspire them as well.

In an article by Johns Hopkins, music contributes to life by:

  • Inspiring creativity
  • Memory recall
  • Inciting changes in the body

Music has even been noted to help people with Alzheimer’s disease as it stimulates memories. And through it all, music can help reduce stress and anxiety for people with this and possibly other similar type diseases.
